SLIDE RULE / ReferenceSCREENSHOT
The Slide Rule reference tool showing the periodic table with iron selected, beside a list of data sets including physical constants, material properties and steam tables
The periodic table, one of sixteen data sets. Choose an element for its properties, or a category in the key to pick it out.
WHAT IT DOES

Look it up, then use it.

Every value here can go straight into a calculation, so nothing is retyped and no digit is dropped on the way.

Physical constants

The CODATA 2018 values, from the speed of light and the Planck constant to the molar gas constant, with the ones fixed exactly by the SI marked as exact.

Periodic table

All 118 elements. Choose one for its atomic mass, electron configuration, electronegativity, density, melting and boiling points and oxidation states.

Material data

Thermal, mechanical, electrical and optical properties of common engineering materials, plus fluids, gases and phase changes: Young’s modulus and yield strength of A36 steel, the conductivity of copper, the viscosity of glycerol.

Steam and property tables

Saturated water by temperature and by pressure, superheated steam, air at 1 atm, liquid water and saturated R-134a. Type a temperature or pressure and every column is interpolated between the two nearest rows.

Section properties

Enter the dimensions of a rectangle, tube, I-section, T-section, channel, angle and more for its area, centroid, second moments of area, section moduli and radii of gyration.

Search across all of it

Type “copper”, “steam” or “I-section” and go to the row. A value you click can be copied, added to a worksheet, or used in the calculator with its units attached.

WHAT IS IN IT

Sixteen data sets, kept together.

The tables that thermodynamics, heat transfer, materials and mechanics courses ask you to read from, in one place and in consistent units.

Material values are typical figures from standard references (the CRC Handbook, NIST, Çengel & Ghajar, ASM and MatWeb). Real values vary with grade, temper, purity and temperature, so check a datasheet for design work.

QUESTIONS

Before you open it.

Can I interpolate in the steam tables?

Yes. Each property table has a Look up box: type a temperature or a pressure and every column is interpolated in a straight line between the two nearest rows.

Where do the values come from?

Constants are the CODATA 2018 recommended values. Material and property data are typical figures from standard references, named under each table.

How do I use a value in a calculation?

Click it, then choose Use in calculator or Add to worksheet. It arrives with its units, so the calculator can convert it for you.

Is it free?

Yes. All of the reference data is part of the free plan, with no account needed.
